‘Creative Commons’: Opportunities for Public Life, Work and Play in Hong Kong 3.0

[lang_zh]請參考英文版。[/lang_zh]
[lang_en]

Public seminar by Mr. Pindar Wong, Co-Public Lead of Creative Commons Hong Kong

  • Date: Monday (November 30) 4:30-6:00 PM.
  • Venue: Lecture room T5, Meng Wah Complex (next to Eliot Hall)

Local Internet pioneer and entrepreneur Pindar Wong discusses the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities facing Hong Kong’s first digital generation. The talk will focus on ‘Creative Commons’, a progressive copyright system that allows to share, remix, reuse and upload digital materials — legally. How can ‘Creative Commons’  create new commercial and cultural opportunities by changing our copyright culture  from ‘No you can’t’  to ‘Yes you Can!’? How can ‘Creative Commons’ be used to open up access to our cultural archives such as those held by public service broadcasters like RTHK?

Mr. Pindar Wong is the past Chairman of the Asia and Pacific Internet Association; the Executive Committee Chairman of the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies; Advisor to the Asia Pacific Networking Group; and international advisory board member of the UNDP’s Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme. He is also the Chairman of VeriFi (Hong Kong) Ltd., an Internet infrastructure consultancy, and Co-Public Lead of Creative Commons Hong Kong. Previously he co-founded Hong Kong’s first licensed ISP in 1993, was the alternate chair of Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, and was appointed by the Internet Architecture Board to the Policy Oversight Committee. He served as the first Vice Chairman of ICANN’s Board of Directors in 1999, was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Internet Society (2003), and served on the Board of the Public Interest Registry (2006). Prior to his involvement in pioneering commercial Internet services, he was a doctoral candidate and Sir Edward Youde research fellow at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Before gaining his doctoral fellowship, Mr. Wong was briefly a banker after graduating with first class honors in computing science from Imperial College London.

This event will be offered in the framework of the MJ course “Critical Issues in Journalism and Global Communications”.

CCHK Launches the Liberal Studies Creative Archive

http://hk.creativecommons.org/archive/
http://hk.creativecommons.org/

延伸閱讀:[/lang_zh][lang_en]Yesterday the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees passed a resolution to include Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License (CC-BY-SA) as the primary content licence while keeping GNU Free Documentation Licence (GFDL). This resolution follows a vote among the international Wikimedia community, where 88% of all voters who expressed an opinion supported the change.

This resolution aims to make all Wikimedia project content more interoperable with existing CC-BY-SA content and easier to re-use. When Wikipedia was founded in 2001, the project founder, Jimmy Wales, only had a limited choice in selection of licences that supported the ideal of free sharing. Creative Commons licenses were not yet created and thus he chose GFDL, which was very much catered for printed software manuals. Creative Commons now is widely used in online content sharing and thus a suitable licence for the content of Wikimedia projects.

The above resolution is the achievement of the collaboration between three parties: Wikimedia Foundation, Free Software Foundation and Creative Commons. Hopefully, making all Wikimedia project content compatible with both licences will encourage participation and re-use. The Wikimedia Foundation planned to implement the change in licences next month.

A Map of Our Own:Kwun Tong Culture and Histories

[lang_en]Map Of Our Own – Kwun Tong Culture and Histories
Kwun Tong is about to go through urban renewal plan in the near future. A group of people who care enough about the area build an online sanctuaryA Map Of Our Own – Kwun Tong Culture and Histories and employ digital technology to capture the moments before they past. The content is released under Creative Commons licenses, which can eliminate copyright hassles in preserving the materials. Moreover, Creative Commons licences encourage sharing, reuse and remix. Here is a message from one of the contributors, Anson Mak:

dear friends,

we are happy to soft-launch this project — A Map Of Our Own – Kwun Tong Culture and Histories. we have been working on it for 2 years and will go on for another 12 years.[/lang_en][lang_zh]我們的地圖 -- 官塘的文化與歷史

[/lang_zh]

as some of you may know, Kwun Tong town centre will experience the largest urban renewal plan in Hong Kong. 2 years ago, i thought, it might be good to have an interactive web site, that are of moving image, photography and sound creative works, while our sister blog, “living in kwuntong” (http://kwuntong.wordpress.com) is a text-based informative site. now, after months of effort, it’s time to share with you all.

briefly, this project is a database driven website, a participatory, interactive and locative archive on Kwun Tong culture. it supports multiple contributors and various types of media works (sound, still
image and moving image). visitors can interact with this archive in various ways including search on map/time-line/categories; sharing of media works in other web 2.0 platforms; audio-visual mix and rendering of itineraries for Kwun Tong walk.

if you are not familiar with multi-trajectories and non-linearity of interactive web site, here is a visitors guide for your reference. http://www.kwuntongculture.hk/en/home.php?op=about#5

i have two roles in this project — project director and one of the contributors. here is a brief writing i did as the project director, regarding idea and practice of this project.

http://www.kwuntongculture.hk/en/home.php?op=about#2

as a contributor, i have 64 posts/works on the web site. and until today, there are 125 works from 16 contributors. we will go on upload creative media works especially before the town centre is gone.
this is an open platform and how the site will become depends on the ways contributors use it.
moreover, we definitely welcome others who are interested in Kwun Tong culture and history. if you are interested to join us, pls let me know.

furthermore, we use hong kong creative commons license for authorization of copyrights and distribution of media works. we hope this project can also serves as an experiment of allowing others to use some of our works tagged by share-alike license for creative works.

we are still re-working on the design of the archive page… and more refinements are coming… and our work continues…

please spread the news, leave messages at individual posts’ comment field, or write to me directly on any suggestion and comment.

thanks very much.

best,

NetMission Ambassadors to bridge the Digital Divide

[lang_en]
One important focus for Creative Commons Hong Kong is education. Making education materials accessibility for all is one of our dreams. DotAsia, a not-for-profit organization, shares the same dream. They are implementing this approach through the NetMission Ambassadors (http://NetMission.asia) program.

The NetMission Ambassadors program aims to bring together a network of dedicated young volunteers devoted towards promoting and contributing towards digital inclusion, Internet governance as well as a respectable and harmonious Internet environment. The program will recruit and select 25 Young NetMission Ambassadors every year, who will take part in a comprehensive training program including seminars, workshops, site visits and exchange programs in China and around Asia to participate in related national and international events.[/lang_en]
[lang_zh]

[/lang_zh]

[lang_en]
The training program will invite experts on the subjects of Internet governance, digital inclusion and other related areas to share insights, experiences and thoughts with the NetMission Ambassadors. Each graduating class of NetMission Ambassadors will also be tasked to develop and implement a digital inclusion project or event (Community Project) to raise awareness and bring positive social impact to the information society in Asia.

Edmon Chung, Chief Executive Officer of DotAsia, is now presenting on the topic of “Intellectual Property and the Digital Divide” with CC as the obvious solution during the ambassador recruitment talks in different Universities in Hong Kong. Moreover, CC will be further explained in training and will be employed during the implementations of the digital inclusion projects.

If you know anyone who is currently studying in the top 10 local tertiary institutes and universities or you are a student, please consider applying for this program before 25 Feb. You can refer to http://NetMission.asia for further details.
[/lang_en]
[lang_zh]

  • Venue: iResources Centre, IT Street, Level 3, Cyberport 3, 100 Cybeport Road Hong Kong

About Mr. Chu’s seminar:

Web 2.0 enables people from different countries, languages, and cultures to collaborate. Successful Web 2.0 media projects include Wikipedia (Encyclopedia) and Global Voices Online (Citizen journalism). For instance, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia written by millions of Internet users all over the world.

OOPS (Opensource Opencourse Prototype System), is another successful project under the Web 2.0 era. OOPS translates the vast library of resources from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) on-line Open Courseware into Chinese. From just two persons the foundation has now grown to 2,300 volunteers from 16 countries around the world.

Besides technology infrastructure, flexible copyright licenses such as Creative Commons are a key factor enabling such collaborative projects. Flexible licenses based on “Some Rights Reserved” free the creations of individual contributors from a “All Rights Reserved” copyright regime, so that works can be shared and mixed together without any potential copyright hassle.

Lucifer Chu is the founder of OOPS. He will talk about the trend of Web 2.0,  its implications, why Creative Commons is important and how he applied it to the OOPS project.
